JUSTINE FORMENTELLI

ART STATEMENT

My practice focuses on the oscillation between construction and dissolution to reveal the rare moments when new possibilities emerge.

Drawing on the visual language employed within Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and calligraphy, I create arrangements of mostly abstract fragments, gestures and recurring shapes that have come to form the basis of a personal visual vocabulary.

Focusing on the spatial relationship between fragments and on their precarious equilibrium, I set up chain reactions of events waiting to happen. The loosely distributed elements allude to a prospective new order, whether they are coming together to form an original agglomeration or are about to be dispersed into disarray.

This dichotomy between order and disorder in my paintings reflects the inherent tension between our need for structure, stability and meaning on one hand and a world in a permanent state of flux with increasingly fewer beliefs on the other.

By painting elements in motion within a contained shape, my intention is to highlight an eventful place of emergence and a pivotal moment in time where different factors converge towards a new potential . These rare windows of opportunity or events open the way to renewed possibilities and hope.
